School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering Launches 2026 “International Day of Light” Series of Events On the occasion of the 2026 International Day of Light, from May 13 to 16, the School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering launched a series of science popularization and academic exchange activities. The school is building anintegrated optical talent training system covering primary, secondary anduniversity education. Outstanding students from the Middle School Affiliated to University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) were invitedto campus for immersive science popularization practice, aiming to cultivate anenvironment for scientific innovation and help young people fasten the “firstbutton” of their scientific and technological innovation life. The series of events consist of four parts: Cutting-edge Poster Exhibition in Optics, Immersive Science Popularization Practice for Primary and Secondary School Students, Optics-themed Quiz, and Doctoral Academic Forum. Co-organizedby the UESTC Student Chapters of the Society for Information Display (SID), the Chinese Optical Society (COS), Optica, the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the BOE-UESTC Club, together with the Graduate Union and Party Branches of the school, the events integrated science communication, academic exchange and practical education, promoting the in-depth developmentof the integrated education model. The Cutting-edge Poster Exhibition in Optics adopted a display-based learning approach, covering the background of the International Day of Light, brief introductions to major optical academic organizations worldwide, and breakthroughs in cutting-edge disciplines. The posters combined images, texts, achievements and technical analyses, showing both historical depth andtechnological frontier. Teachers and students stopped to browse, directly experiencing the innovation vitality and application prospects of optoelectronics, and creating a strong atmosphere of pursuing light and seeking knowledge. The Immersive Science Popularization Practice for Primary and Secondary School Students focused on optical science enlightenment and was carefully designed according to the cognitive characteristics of young people. Under the guidanceof student volunteers from the school, students from the Middle School Affiliated to UESTC conducted basic optical experiments in person and closelyobserved optoelectronic scientific and technological achievements. Through immersive experience, young students felt the charm of optics, ignitedcuriosity and yearning for the optoelectronic field, and planted seeds ofpursuing light, exploring knowledge and loving science. s.
The Optics-themed Quiz covered three dimensions: basic optical theories, cutting-edge optoelectronic research achievements, and industrial technologyapplications. The questions balanced theoretical depth, industry hotspots and popular science fun, including the history of optics, core technicalprinciples, and emerging research directions. Teachers and students from allgrades of the university participated actively. The contestants respondedquickly and answered calmly, demonstrating their solid professional knowledgeand broad academic vision through intense competition.
The Doctoral Academic Forum promoted learning through research and inspiredinnovation through discussion, guiding young students to deepen their understanding of optical frontiers. The forum focused on three cutting-edge research directions: the development of new OLED materials, microwave signalgeneration technology, and radio-frequency photonic communication systems. Participating doctoral students shared their latest research results, enlightened innovative thinking and broadened academic horizons throughideological exchanges, showing the mission of young sci-tech workers in the optoelectronic field to scale new heights.
KnowingLight·UsingLight·Creating the Future – 2025 International Day of LightKnowledge Competition Successfully Concluded On May 15th, the lobby on the first floor of BuildingB, Area 4, Research Building at the Qingshuihe Campus of the University ofElectronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) once again hosted a splendidacademic feast – the 2025 International Day of Light Knowledge Competition.Co-organized by the Society for Information Display (SID) Chengdu Chapter andthe Chinese Optical Society (COS) UESTC Student Chapter, the competitioncentered on the theme "Knowing Light · Using Light · Creating the Future."Its aim was to spark students' interest in optical knowledge while enhancingtheir quick thinking and teamwork skills. The competition adopted a buzzer-beater format. Thequestions covered multiple fields including physical optics, geometricaloptics, optical communication, laser technology, illumination science, anddisplay technology. The organizers meticulously prepared forty single-choicequestions (worth 1 point each for a correct answer) and twenty multiple-choicequestions (worth 2 points each for a correct answer). Participants vied toanswer by raising their hands, creating a tense and lively atmosphere. Ultimately, based on the highest scores, awards were presented: one Grand Prize, two First Prizes, four Second Prizes, and five Third Prizes, recognizing theparticipants' outstanding performances.
As thequestions were presented one by one, the contestants remained fully focused andactively answered, showcasing solid knowledge reserves and quick reflexes. Thecompetition site reached exciting climaxes, with the participants' brilliantperformances earning rounds of applause. Their enthusiasm and concentration notonly reflected their passion for the field of optics but also infused the eventwith boundless energy and excitement.
Followingthe competition, the host announced the list of winners and presented theprizes. The host congratulated all participating students and expressed specialgratitude to the COS UESTC Student Chapter, the SID Chengdu Chapter, and theBOE UESTC Club for their strong support. Their professional guidance anddedicated efforts laid a solid foundation for the event's success. Theevent concluded with a group photo of all participants, marking a perfect endto the competition. Through this contest, the students not only consolidatedtheir knowledge of optics but also strengthened their sense of teamwork andcompetition. It is believed that in the future, they will engage in the studyand research of the optical field with even greater enthusiasm, contributingtheir strength to the development of photonic science.
